Demolition Derby Day
Okay, it's time for me to admit it. There's a part of me that is a huge redneck. There, I said it. Those of you who know me know that I prefer a cold beer in a dive bar to a fru-fru cocktail in a fancy schmancy restaurant. I also prefer hootin' and hollerin' while guys drive cars into each other, slinging dirt and spilling oil to a sophisticated play in some uppity theatre. That doesn't mean that I can't appreciate and enjoy a fancy schmancy restaurant or an entertaining play from time to time--(after all, I had a season subscription to Playhouse in the Park for 2 years)--it just wouldn't be my first choice on most days. Give me the Demolition Derby at our county fair, with an ice cream cone with sprinkles or a funnel cake with powdered sugar and I am content. Tonight I will be content.
I can't explain why I get so excited about the Demolition Derby. Something about the crashes, the way the cars end up looking like they have been crushed by a car smasher yet they still keep running, the small fires that develop that could be real trouble, but usually aren't; maybe I live vicariously through the drivers, imagining that's me running into some idiot on the expressway because they don't know how to drive. I don't know what it is and I guess I don't have to explain it...I just love it.
Last night was the mini car derby. I don't enjoy that one, plus I had to work anyway. Tonight is the full-size cars. There's more to crash in on those so therefore, much more action. If you haven't allowed yourself the pleasure of going to a county fair and watching the derby, I highly recommend it to you at least once. Get in touch with your inner redneck. We've all got one and she needs to come out and play once in a while. Who knows? You may end up having an overwhelming urge to watch the tractor pull, too.

Weekend finds
This weekend I discovered a few things that I'd like to recommend to you:
1. Bud Light Lime. On Saturday we went out on my aunt's boyfriend's boat on the river. I took the new Bud Light Lime to drink for the day. Can I just say that this beer is awesome! It's very refreshing to drink during the day. If you are a daytime drinker like I am sometimes, I highly recommend you check out this new beer. Also, it seems that it's less filling than regular Bud Light. Good stuff.
2. The movie "Freedom Writers". This is an older movie and one I was reluctant to watch because when I went to college to become a high school English teacher, this was what I wanted to do. I have always had a soft place in my heart for the kids in the school system that were the "throwaway" kids. By that I mean the ones that the system deemed unteachable or unsaveable. My favorite class when I was student teaching was the lowest level of sophmore English. These kids were rough around the edges, for sure. As rough as kids from Cave City, Ky could be, but rough nonetheless. I had to break up a fight mid-class when I was just observing! But I loved this class and the kids in it. So I was afraid to watch this movie because it would remind me of dreams unrealized. It did that, but it was also so rewarding to see what one person can do if they are committed. It was a little Hollywood in places, but overall, a really good movie.
3. Baked potatoes rolled in butter and sea salt. We had the kids over for dinner last night and one of the things we had was baked potatoes. I decided to try to replicate Outback's baked potatoes so I rolled them in butter and then sea salt. Although there was a little too much salt on them (next time I will probably just sprinkle it on instead of roll it on), they were really good. Outback better watch out!
4. Those microwaveable cleaning towels that clean out your microwave. This is more of a "buyer beware" because these things suck. The concept is you put this packet in the microwave and at some point in the heating process, the bag pops open and releases this cleanser that will make the gunk in the microwave wipe right off. You leave it in there 3 minutes after the microwave stops running and then you're supposed to use the towel and miraculously everything will come off. It's a lie. The gunk stays on there and the towels are worthlesss. Don't waste your money on this one.

It's a typing test and then you rank with other people who have played it that day and also overall highest scores. It's a lot of fun and can be addictive so be careful. If you really suck at typing, though, don't even click on it. You will only be frustrated.

Nothing to talk about
I really don't have anything to talk about today. I thought instead I would show you a picture of our houseboat that I'm always talking about.

Here was our awesome wedding cake. Everyone loved it! The Suzy Q's were a huge hit, although I preferred the Twinkies.

I don't know these people, but found this on a photog's blog. This couple met when they were 12 and they are getting married on 12-20-08 so they put pics on their save the date of when they were 12, 20 and now. Cute idea!

Deadliest Catch
Okay, have you all gotten into this show yet? It's on Tuesday nights on the Discovery channel and it's awesome. We watched 2 hours of it last night, plus the after show which is called "After the Catch". It's a reality show that shows crab fishing in the Bering Sea. It's incredible what these guys go through just to get us some crab legs. You really should check it out. It's awesome.
Speaking of shows, have you also seen "Jon and Kate Plus 8"? I forget what channel that is on, but it follows the parents of sextuplets plus twins. The wife is super organized and in my opinion, controlling, but it is a really good show. I can't imagine having 8 kids and trying to run a household. They are only 30 years old, too. Can you imagine?
Since we're on a roll here, have you also checked out "Intervention"? It's on Monday nights--forget the channel. It is a very compelling show. It's amazing what addicts do. If you're feeling bad about yourself and your life, you'll think you're living the big life once you watch the depths that these people go. The other night this guy was shooting up heroin and he was getting his water to cut the heroin from a toilet bowl! Unbelievable.
Just in case you think all I do is watch t.v., I don't religiously watch any of these shows. I mean, come on, it's not like it's "Lost" or something. I just catch them when I can.
I'll tell you some shows that I won't watch--"The Bachelor" or "The Bachelorette". It's ridiculous how these people--the guys, too--"fall in love" after spending about 2 hours with someone. They cry their eyes out when they get cut. Ridiculous. Now I will watch "Rock of Love" with Bret Michaels on VH1. That's just good tv! Kidding, but it is funny watching these rock 'n roll, big hair, slutty girls fall for Bret. I don't think he's truly trying to find love--he's trying to get laid and by the clips they show, I think he's scoring a lot! It's still pretty entertaining.

4th of July followup
As you can see, the flag cake seemed to be a hit. They demolished it on our boat ride. The strawberries and whipped topping seemed to be what was most enjoyed since people were picking them off the cake!
Sorry I didn't blog yesterday, but I just plain didn't feel like it. We had a super fun 4th of July weekend. We had some bad weather, but not enough to ruin the weekend by any means.
Someone (that someone shall remain nameless, but it wasn't me--honestly) decided it would be a good idea to take my gloves that I do dishes with and put them on their feet. These ideas seem pure genius at the time. Well, if not genius, definitely funny.
Another thing we like to do when alcohol is involved is get out the dress-up hats and what I term "the bag 'o fun". The bag 'o fun consists of maracas, tambourines and an assortment of musical instruments. Mr loves to collect funny hats. Here we are wearing 2 of them--he's Nemo and I'm a sailor. They get way wilder than this, but I guess we were feeling kinda mellow this night.
